Semiben, wife of great Dalit leader Naran Vora is no more. She was bedridden since last one year after a severe paralytic attack. I pay my homage to a Dalit woman who gave tremendous sacrifice in her life and gave unflinching support to her husband who led Dalit resistance in tumultuous times of infamous anti-reservation movement in the year 1981 in Gujarat.
Naran Vora was one of the founders of great Dalit Panthers in Gujarat and selfless champion of Dalit cause in the seventies of last twentieth century. Though ‘not so literate’ like present days English-speaking, smart, opportunist tribe of agitationists, Vora’s commitment was more profound and rock-solid. He was a mill-worker but his involvement in Dalit movement was so intense that he could not get his provident fund and gratuity after his retirement, his family suffered the worst and passed their days in abject poverty.
Fortunately, I along with my better-half visited Vora’s home just a month ago and met Semiben. She became emotional and cried while remembering her lion-hearted husband who died in a severe heart attack in 1987. He was only 47, not die-able age. The strains and stress of a movement took its toll on his body. His last days were pathetically treacherous and depressing. The man who took part in the legendary land struggle of the sixties under the leadership of RPI and jailed and who again imprisoned in 1981 to save reservation of his community was isolated and neglected by the same selfish, self-centred, self-seeking bunch of elitists, reservation-beneficiaries.
I have decided to collect fifty thousand rupees and give the money to his granddaughters and sons for their educational assistance. Jay Bhim.
